That, of course, is one of the myths about the Creative Cloud system. The software isn't cloud based - it and your files reside on your own computer, just as they always have. If you let your subscription lapse, the software will stop working (although you get a period of grace of up to 30 days for the monthly subscription) but your files are safe and accessible by other software.
I also don't like the idea of open ended price - you pay every month until what?
In my case, until Adobe get too greedy - then I'll go back to my CS3 -or maybe I'll buy a copy of Lightroom, assuming Adobe continues to sell it.
