Because of the way the North American cattle industry is integrated, if we have a problem, you have a problem. It's really that simple. Canadian ranchers were quite aghast that America seemed to avoid BSE when they knew darned well that it had to be present in American herds. I saw a few videos from American slaughterhouses where downers were being dealt with. While they didn't make it into the food chain, which is all that matters, the disease was as present in American herds as Canadian. I think we only ended up with half a dozen or so reported cases, but it's impossible to know how many Canadian ranchers were following the lead of their American counterparts WRT dealing with downers.
