There has never been a single case of BSE in a beef herd, it was all dairy cows. Because, of course, it does not present until the animal is about five years old or more. BSE could be everywhere in the world in beef herds and we would not know it.
The UK exports (now that our herding and meat production practices are demonstrably the safest in the western hemisphere) a large percentage of the beef produced here. We don't need to protect our growers from imports because of price, we do it for reasons of public safety.
