I too have held a Canon 70-200L f4. I was not overly impressed. It may
be a better optic, it may not be, but does it matter? After all the
limiting factor these days is the resolving power of the sensor in your
camera. The SMC-P F 70-210 is already theoretically overkill for the
sensor in the *ist-D and assuming that the Canon is at best a D20 it
should be very hard to see any difference in resolving power based on
the which lens is used. I see constant F stop envy at work here.

which is 300 equivallent on an ist-D ;)
That said I like to consider constant f/4 as being consumer and
constant f/2.8 as being semi-pro/pro ;) I know, more like wishful
thinking :D
I'd second that. For starters, 200/4 would probably auto focus faster
than 200/5.6...
I should say that I held in my dirty hands Canon 70-200/4 L and this
lens weighs just order of 250 gram more than my F70-210. Yet the Canon
is considerably better optic. I do admit I paid for my lens 15 times
less than the (happy) owner of the Canon ;-).
Still, I agree with Thibouille.
