I can't speak for Herb but I don't put poor lenses in front of film either, 
because ultimately it's a waste of my time and effort. The *ist D 6MP sensor 
will allow discrimination between good and bad lenses but at the resolution 
threshold there is no visible difference whereas on high resolution film there 
was a visible difference using the same lenses.
