Hi Donna and others, For me the quickest solution is to make extensive use of the preview pane. I also found it helpful to go into VO utility under navigation and uncheck the box labeled: "Automatically interact when using tab key".
Though I can interact with the preview pane text by placing a finger on the trackpad while pressing control, I find it more efficient to just press tab and the text is usually read automatically. I can skim through by moving my finger on the trackpad. To reply I press command-r. On high traffic lists such as this one, I turn on threaded view, and can then expand/contract threads via the right and left arrow keys respectively. I absolutely love the trackpad, but one gotcha (at least for me) is that while composing text, my palm hits somewhere on the trackpad and randomly moves my focus. I try to remember to always turn off trackpad commander during any data entry. Of course YMMV, but if you're comfortable with the IOS interface, you'll probably like getting away from the five key vo commands :). Please feel free to contact me off list if necessary.
