A better solution would be to fix this inside LyX. The on-screen 
translations will be wrong with the changed mo files.

We should IMHO. Your installer tries to be too clever for my taste 
(fiddling with personal preferences, removing programs on 
deinstallation). I do see that this is useful for many people, but I 
would be very upset if an official installer would change my preferences, 
so lets be conservative here.

Why not? Something like "An alternative installer for windows is available 
at bla bla." And then a short decsription of the differences in one or 
two sentences.
