I just don't buy Wegner's whinge about it should be 11 vs 11 otherwise
"the beautiful spectacle is ruined" - well in that case he should
instruct his players not to make either A) suicidally rash charges at
other players or B) cynical professional fouls in an attempt to prevent
the opponents from securing an advantage by scoring.

It is not the ref's responsibility to keep 11 men on each team - it's
the team's.

In a personal side to this - I've worked with a gooner for the past 10
years who has extolled the virtues of Keown, Adams, Dixon and all those
other uglies - often because they were "willing to take one for the
team" - ie get sent off for a professional foul if it meant saving an
otherwise certain goal - this to me is pigeons coming home to roost...

This is exactly what I mean by having lost the plot. You don't save the
game
by ruining it. Booking Lehman and giving the goal would have acheived
your
objective above, and the game would have continued 11 against 11 - just
as
it is intended to be. From what I saw, the sending off didn't deter the
other players anyway. Sending off should be a last resort. Anything else

ignores the fact that the people watching are what it is all about. Not
FIFA
and not the referee.

unbalanced the game.lehman is responsible for his doings, not the ref.

The ref had a choice. He chose to penalise both teams !!
How can you argue that sending a player off when you simply don't have
to is
not unbalancing a game ?
