Irrespective of goal scoring opportunities, grabbing someone round the ankle (rather than say just knocking into him) whilst in full flight as Lehman did, is highly dangerous and is of course serious foul play. The red card was deserved just for that. The first thing that referees mustn't lose sight of is their role of protecting all the other players on the pitch.

It didn't look so dangerous to me but perhaps I am mistaken. Keepers flying into players and "knocking" them as you put it is far more likely to result in a broken leg IMHO.How does this fit with the ref taking no action for the boot in the groin later on ? If the ref was REALLY protecting the players from each other then that appeared to be a far more dangerous incident.
