The bottom line is players (and therefore presumably managers) would prefer to have a player sent off than concede a goal, otherwise the 'last defender' would not foul the player and get a red card - he would let the attacker try and score (and hope keeper saves it \ he misses) and ensure he stays on the pitch. Same when a player handles on line to prevent a certain goal - he is taking the view that it is better to get sent off and hope the opposition miss the penalty rather than just letting ball go in the net.
 
At the end of the day it is just typical whinging from Arsenaland their myopic manager. I see they have no critictism of the ref for giving the free kick when the Arsenal player took a blatant dive !

I don't agree. Lehman wasn't deterred. He didn't know that they were going
to put the ball in the net. I don't see any keeper thinking I'll bring him
down but so long as they score I won't get sent off.
