Dan, The amp I had would boost the output of 3 watts power (some handhelds have 5 watts output power) to a powerful 10 watts. When mine worked correctly, I could talk to aircraft in the air over an airport which was sixty miles away and I was sitting on the ground. In the air, you will get even more range than that. The amplifier I had was made by "Communication Specialist part number CS-10" however they no longer make this amplifier and AS&S has pulled it from their catalog. If you still have the 2003-2004 version of AS&S catalog you can see it on page 445.
