I have flown my KR across country a few times with a Icom A-5. It is
one of the smallest handhelds out there. It works awesome and you can
program 10 banks of 20 freq's through your PC for your route. Then it
becomes one click to change to the next freq enroute. I have never used
any type of booster but have talked to people at 100 miles. On one trip
home from the Gathering, Richard Shirley was in Tennessee and I was
coming from Alabama to meet in Red Oak, Arkansas. We were both an hour
out and able to communicate.

For the money and performance. I like the handheld. If I did install a
panel com, the Becker would be my first choice for the size of our
planes. The microair seems to be ok as well and is less expensive that
the Becker.

The Transponder gives you more options if you are flying and distances.
Again, one of the small Becker or Microair would be good. I have (had)
the Trimble/ Terra TXN 200D. Good unit but no longer in production and
hard to have repaired reasonably.
