I have nothing against using a hand held and some of them work great.I just wanted to panel mount the radio.It is your choice in what you like.I bought a Icom A200 for mine.As far as transponders go it is nice to get flight following when you can or if you get lost.Depending on where you live or plan on flying would be a big part of your decision
