Securities are things like shares in a company. They have value
that fluctuates with the expected success of the company. Usually
you buy or sell many of them at a time (like hundreds, or hundreds
of thousands), hence the plural.

Kind of a bank account, except they are still happy if your
balance is negative (up to a limit) because they trust you and are
delighted to collect interest. It's an easy way of borrowing and repaying
money in small amounts as needed.
