Maybe the US automakers don't. I don't know about Ford or Stellantis, but I've read that GM is losing money on EVs. It's not clear to me how much of that loss has been offset by their profits from selling gas-guzzlers with credits from their EV sales. Maybe someone else knows. Outside the US it's different. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but if memory serves, Carlos Ghosn said in 2014 that the Nissan Leaf was already profitable. The Renault Zoe turned a profit at about the same time. Since 2018 or 2019, Renault's EVs have been just as profitable as their equivalent ICEV cousins. For example, they made as much on Zoes as on Clios. I've also read that Volkswagen's current EVs are profitable, but I can't find the citation right now, sorry.
