Gentlefolk, A lot of looking at things did not throw any new light on the problem. Hit home, career off to the offset and then try and get back to the limit switch at 3 times the home search velocity.
So using my time honoured approach to mysterious computer problems I went back into stepconf and using the experience gained set up the axis speeds and offsets. Voila, hit home, step back off the limit/home switch and then position nicely to the home_offset. All works. A quick examination of the .ini file does not show anything markedly different from the one that failed. Onwards, onwards.....
