When I bought our '84 Landfall 35, I went to Progressive who told me they
subrogate to Hagerty for boats over 25 years old. I went with Hagerty who
has since got out of the boat insurance gig and a company called Markel took
over the policy and now handles my insurance.

Hagerty mandated a follow up survey after I had owned the boat for 5 years
which made me worry as I still have the original rod rigging (which is
flawless). Fortunately, my surveyor was a former Landfall 38 owner and
handled the survey as an "insurance survey" not a purchase survey, where he
was slightly less intense about picking up any and all flaws due to aging.
I've yet to hear from Markel if they're going to need the boat re-surveyed
anytime soon. My premium for a replacement cost policy with a deductible
runs right around $1100 per year. I've yet to make a claim (knock on teak)
and I really don't want to test that any time soon.

I switched to Progressive last year and so far so good. My genoa was
destroyed in a storm last fall while on the furler and they paid to replace
it (much to my surprise). An adjuster came to my sailmakers loft to look at
the sail and the comment was that he appeared to have no clue about anything
related to sails and boats. Perhaps a good thing? Dave
