I too have Progressive. I switched because BoatUS/Geico changed their policy so for an older boat it essentially was liability only, they would depreciate everything, which for a 52 year-old boat means no real hull coverage at all. I have 3 boat polices with Progressive, the C&C, a Boston Whaler, and our dinghy. I think I pay about $750 or so per year for all three. Believe it or not the Whaler and the dinghy are insured 150 miles offshore from Maine to Florida as well as Coquina. I have never had a claim and cannot speak to that aspect. Being clueless cuts both ways. They may pay for things a "real" marine insurance company would tell you to forget about. They also may not know how to deal with admiralty law at all. I read about a case of a boat on a mooring hit by a freighter that then kept going. Progressive did not know how to deal with it, they had no clue that commercial ships had agents one could contact to submit an insurance claim, they just thought the ship was gone and that was that.
* If Progressive ever changes their old-boat friendly policies, I think half the boats in America will become uninsurable overnight. My genoa was destroyed in a storm last fall while on the furler and they paid to replace it (much to my surprise). An adjuster came to my sailmakers loft to look at the sail and the comment was that he appeared to have no clue about anything related to sails and boats. Perhaps a good thing?
