I share your frustration finding/keeping experienced crew for racing. There are so many other things going on, family commitments, work, travelling, in everyone's life, it's hard to get a strong commitment from enough people to field a strong team on a regular basis. I like the two handed races w my son best, and wish there were a few singlehanded races closer to me.
I also looked at these sprit kits. I like the Selden product. The engineering and finish seems superior. The tack downhaul goes through the pole. I figured I'd need a10ft pole to get a good 5ft extension. Didn't know PHRF would allow 24% without penaty, and 42" seems worth trying. If I ever actually commit, I'd buy the pole longer and install a second deck fitting and extend the pole to 60". One fitting for 42" legal racing, and the other for 60" cruising. I'd probably go with an aluminum pole, since no-one has to lift the thing. Either way, I'd rig an amsteel bobstay to a U-bolt thru the bow to hold down the tip. I have an asym I have never flown. If you are buying a sail, check out a furling Assym which are still evolving and improving. That system is better than buying a sock, cause you can douse it from the cockpit. Interesting project. Keep us informed of your progress? I am going for the max length with out a PHRF penalty, which in our YRA is 24% of J. This will give me a sprit that is 42.6 inches. This decision is driven by a couple things. First, the ability to get 7 or more experienced crew to manage the Symmetrical spinnaker. And to reduce the overall complexity in sailing the boat. I am wondering if any one else has made this switch and what their experience has been. I will certainly share my experience.
