If the NADA boat book works like the NADA car books, which I presume is
likely, the "suggested List" is a representation of the MSRP of the boat
when new, with average equipment. What constituted average equipment would
vary by car model - eg. High end models might include things like power
locks and power seats while low end models would not. Perhaps one of the
37/40 owners could tell you if $134k was a typical list price in 1989.

High and low retail are supposed to be based on recent transactions reported
to the NADA. Don't have the foggiest on how recent or what the time period
is for boats. When I was in the car business a couple of decades ago, the
data was for a rolling 90 day period and we figured it was about 3 months
old, so low retail was a good target selling price for an average used car.
But that is just an old rule of thumb and may no longer have value because
of technology and faster data collection and reporting methods.

Hi David,

I suppose this is obvious but make sure your surveyor is able to be certain
there are no issues with wet or delaminated balsa core in the hull and deck.
I don't have the 1989 laminate schedule but the 1990 laminate schedule for
the 37+ for both hull and deck shows 1" of balsa throughout.

While C&C was very good at cored hull construction there have been a few
hulls that have had wet core issues as they aged, frequently due to
penetrations from the inside (bilge area, etc.) from mounting screws, etc.
I'm aware of one owner whose hull had been in the water year round in the
Caribbean who spent over $50,000.00 in 2009 having wet hull core removed and
replaced. Ouch.

"Suggested List Price at $134,000 then the low retail at $49,200 and the
high retail at $55,720. Does that seem right to anyone?"

The suggested list looks a bit high. I'd think there are few that start
asking at over $115,000.00 these days. What they are actually selling for
is an easy answer if you know a broker who will look up the recent sales in
Yachtworld's database for you (perhaps for a small fee?).

Good luck.

[David Roberts] Wow great feed back! I do know how to run the engine out of
the water. I normally just stick the inlet hose in a bucket that I am
running a flow regulated water hose into. I just keep the buck full, works
great. But that won't let me check the engine under load I think I agree
that a putting the boat in the water is the best test of the engine. Rick, I
did mean to say Survey not appraisal I use the terms in place of each other
and I know they have some difference but I am not sure what they are. There
have been some surveys of the boat and I never asked to see them I don't
know if they are available. I will ask on Monday. There are 1,000 hrs on the
engine. Joel Aronson; Rigging Survey is a really good Idea, thanks.
Jonathan; I am not sure what you mean by " escrow to cover as much as you
possibly can" We are taking a mortgage on a property we currently hold the
deed to, even though there are closing cost it is still way cheaper over the
life of the loan to go that way. So the lender is not concerned with what we
are doing with the money. Can I set up an escrow with a local bank? And no
Joel it is not the boat on Spinsheet. After you made that comment I look it
up and wow $24K for a 1981 40'. The Boat I am look at is owned by a dealer,
they took it in on trade. The good thing is that they are willing to take my
boat in on trade for this one. So we are negotiating a trading difference. I
went on NADA and they are placing the Suggested List Price at $134,000 then
the low retail at $49,200 and the high retail at $55,720. Dose that seem
right to anyone?
