In one of my later tests, I indeed got 16-16-16.

It seems to work, although not perfectly. Black becomes 3-3-3. But I think I
can live with it. I have to wait until it gets dark before I can test it
fully. The thing I absolutely don't want, is a visible difference in black
level between the avi and the black bars that appear when playing non 4:3
fullscreen.
