First to answer your questions: I have a GeForce 6600 LE, with driver 100.14.19. I use xv to play video in mplayer. That is, I use the default, which is probably xv. Now about the video. I really don't understand how this is possible, but when I encode the overly bright frames (where black is turned into RGB 15-15-15) with mencoder, the encoded result is good, as in, black is black again. When I put the mplayer window with the avi that did not go through Cinelerra, and the window with the encoded rendered result over eachother, I can't see a difference when I alt-tab them. When I do this with one of the rendered frames, there is clearly a difference. The original video was a 3D animation, which also consisted of separate files, encoded with mencoder. The situation is now this: encoding the original frames, in which black is black, or encoding Cinelerra's rendered frames, which are too bright, result in avi files which look identical.
