To summarize: when rendering to PNGs and encoding using mencoder from those PNGs, I need to *expand* the color range of source AVI's, but when encoding
with Cinelerra's internal coder, I need to *compress* the range of still
frames. This makes things very complicated...

Perhaps the manual could use a section about this... If so, I offer to write it.

Hold your horses... Isn't this quirk in Cinelerra a bug? I mean,
is it hard to change Cinelerra's behaviour here, so that it does
The Right Thing in the cases you have described?

Another annoyance is Cinelerra's flipping between the X11 and X11-XV
display pipeline. This is too jarring and disruptive to any grading
or colour correction work, so the user will have to work around it
some way. I'm sending a plea to those who have looked into the parts
of Cinelerra's source code that deal with this: Can you provide us
some insights? Because it needs fixing.
