As an addendum to my last message; I did some further testing. When I render to
mpeg4 directly, with Cinelerra, the brightness is OK when using the avi as
source. Apparently, the coder knows what the color scale is, and I guess that
when you feed mencoder loose frames, it assumes 100% color scale, and assumes
the 16-16-16 is *meant* to be grey.

I tried loading a PNG after the avi sequence and encoded with Cinelerra's
internal coder. The avi part then looks OK, but the still frame has too much
contrast.

To summarize: when rendering to PNGs and encoding using mencoder from those
PNGs, I need to *expand* the color range of source AVI's, but when encoding
with Cinelerra's internal coder, I need to *compress* the range of still
frames. This makes things very complicated...

Perhaps the manual could use a section about this... If so, I offer to write
it.
