Not sure I understand the first two questions but here is my guess... the area 
type defines what type of LSA's are allowed in the area so the ABR filters out 
the routes by their LSA type?

Other ways to accomplish the same behavior without configuring an area as an 
NSSA? Configure the area as a totally stubby area or if the area has to be a 
"normal" area you can configure the ASBR with the command default-information 
originate [always] command under the OSPF process.
