Hm. I have found one old xhtml file where I managed to use a .ditaval to have
change bars in the margin, but have no idea where I found the information that
told me how to code the changebar option.

And of course, the nifty new(er) EasyProfiling addon includes a Styles dialogue
and options for setting borders ...
I can live with the fact that .pdf conversion can't handle changebars, though.

I don't think so. "flagging with borders" would not work for paragraphs in the
generated PDF file.
I would say that "flagging with borders" is not supported at all by DITAVAL
files, hence not supported by XMLmind DITA Converter, our in-house DITA
processor.
Please remember that the "Easy Profiling" add-on also generates standard
DITAVAL files and that it is these automatically generated DITAVAL files which
are used by XMLmind DITA Converter during the document conversion process.
