(not replying to you directly, but rather asking other devs for their opinion) Maybe using Shift as a modifier to indicate lower variations could be useful. At the very least, shift could be used by a whole lot of things. Then all HandleKey* from Character and Weapon could have an additional parameter indicating whether shit was pressed. Considering this a boring job, I prefer asking people's opinion before looking at how to make that change...
