Thanks for the saga, Richard. I think this is a perfect example of the best approach when interacting with companies on account issues. The simple fact is that due to our issues regarding accessibility and its effect on our account needs, interacting with lower level reps who are following boilerplate instructions and don't seem to be doing much thinking on their own more times than not requires interaction in real time over the phone with someone in authority.

I'm glad you got everything resolved correctly but I suspect I would not have dealt with the frustration as well as you and your wife did.

Hi Vicky,

I don't mind telling you my saga if you don't mind reading a somewhat lengthy story. 😊

The short answer is I ended up getting it all at once, but it was not easy.

I have Xfinity as my carrier because they have a great deal if you also have their internet, which we do.

I called and talked to a person at length when I was considering the trade-in offer, they made, which on the surface said you could get up to $1000 but had to get unlimited data as part of that deal.

I spent a long time on the phone with the guy and explained that I was not really interested in unlimited data as we are usually around Wi-Fi and don't hardly use over 1 GB a month between the two of us.

He said he could make that happen … that ended up not being true.

The only qualification for the trade-in was that the phone had to be able to power up; well, my 13 pro was in excellent condition so that was not an issue.

I should have read every word of the deal but didn't want to make the guy wait that long, so I took his word for things and set it all up.

I sent my 13 Pro off after getting the 16 pro in my hands and got a confirmation that they received the phone on October 14th, and I qualified for the trade-in.

Our billing cycle is the 15th of the month through the 14th, so mid-month.  The November bill came and no sign of a trade in.

I called, and they said it is in process, and it can take a couple billing cycles to be credited, in the meantime, there was a payment of somewhere around $140 for the phone and the unlimited line … which I complained loudly about, which got me exactly nowhere.

The next billing cycle ended in mid December, and no sign of the trade-in.  Then, I got an email saying the trade-in was cancelled so I did not qualify.

I called, extremely angry, as I had done nothing of the sort.  No one knew what that email was about and couldn't find anything in my record saying the deal was cancelled, so I could do nothing but wait.

Though, I did point out that if the deal did not happen, I would be canceling everything concerning Xfinity, and going to another service for phone, internet, and TV.

When January rolled around and nothing was settled, and I was still being billed over $40 toward the phone plan and about that for the phone itself; I contacted their head office in Philadelphia.  I'll add a PS at the end as to how I knew to do that.

In any case, I talked with a very nice woman in their head of customer service department, and she said she would have someone call me back; probably the next day as it was about 4 PM Eastern time.

Well, within 30 minutes I got a call from a really great gentlemen who worked out of their Chicago office and he saw the notes on my case and I summed it up for him, stressing that I was on the verge of cancelling everything.  He kind of chuckled and said, "yes, I saw that."

He apologized profusely for the complete mess and frustration I had to go through.

He said, he would be applying the entire $1000 onto my account and that would include paying me back for the charges I had already paid, though since I had opted for the 256 GB phone, I was responsible for more than the $1000, I think it was $100 or $150, but that was totally fine and expected.

And he would take me off the unlimited plan and so my wife and I could go back to their 3GB shared plan.

That credit showed up within a day or maybe 36 hours.

My February bill for our 3GB shared plan, which is usually a little over $40 with taxes, was $1.25.

So, everything turned out just fine, though it took a lot of frustration, persistent, and 3 months to sort out.

I won't be doing a trade-in again.  I will take a lower price and sell my old phone next time, (if there is a next time,) and just buy the new phone outright.

The short answer to your question is normally, yes, they would credit you monthly.  So, in a way, I'm glad they screwed up so royally since I got it all done and out of the unlimited plan that would have stretched things out for 2 years.

Now, for the PS.

About 8 years ago, we switched from consumer Cellular to Xfinity because of their great deal since we have their internet.  However, the phone number my wife ended up with turned out to be a bit of a problem.

She is a pastor, and while had retired from an appointment, she was doing a fair amount of funerals/memorial services for a local funeral home.

She noticed that when she called people to make arrangements to meet and plan, they wouldn't answer until the funeral home called them and gave them her number.

Some friends also would not answer, so she would leave a voice mail.

Well, someone finally said that they didn't know it was her calling because the caller ID said something like Ebola Renew or some such thing.

After going 'round and 'round with Xfinity and them with Verizon whom they sublet their towers from, she finally found out that in their database, her number was associated with a renewable energy company in Spain!  Yes, Spain.  After doing some digging, we discovered that company has never had an office in the United States.

So, She ended up getting the phone number and address for the head of their customer service person in Philadelphia.

She wrote a very long lettter.  The guy called her, and after several attempts to get the database changed, and failing, they gave her a new phone number and a $250 credit on the bill.

That is why I called Philadelphia…

So, alls well that ends well. 😊

If you read all of this, you have amazing patience.

I do still like Xfinity's customer service in spite of all the above, especially their accessibility department.

Remember, you asked! 😊

Richard, do you mind telling us whether your carrier gave you all the money upfront or spread it over a long-term period with bill credits each month as most carriers do when you did the trade-in?

At the moment, I'm using an iPhone 13 Mini and an iPhone 15 Pro, and I really can't tell any difference between the two cameras for my purposes. I'm glad, though, that I did get a 15 Pro instead of just a 15 because I have access to the Apple Intelligence stuff if I want to use it.

I don't use AIRA, so I don't know if they can take advantage of the cameras on the pro models, though they can use your phone to take pictures for you, so if they have that much control, I would think they could zoom in, etc.  but, someone else can address that.

I also stuck with the 16 pro because I got a trade-in on the 13 Pro with my carrier that gave me $1,000 which covered almost the entire cost as I went with the 256GB phone.

For most things, I think the basic camera serves people who are blind just fine.

The new phone is rumored to have the 48 megapixil camera, which will certainly give better and possibly more detailed pictures.

Though the LIDAR sensor is supposed to really help in dim light for that, but would it be worth the money; only you can determine that.

That was how this thread started and nobody really answered it.

Essentially for a blind user not interested in taking pictures is there an advantage to the latest iPhone camera system that have Macro and telephoto capabilities, as these are not likely to be in a new lower cost  iPhone. Can an AIRA or Be My Eyes agent even take advantage of the multiple lenses on iPhones, or do these have to be controlled by the iPhone user.

Also, has anybody that has a iPhone PRO model regularly used the LIDAR functions to solve issues?

I am especially interested in anybody that got an iPhone 15 or 16  after having an iPhone SE if they felt the additional cost provided any useful features.

According to both ChatGPT and Copilot:

As of now, Apple CEO Tim Cook has not officially announced a new iPhone SE. However, he has teased an upcoming product launch scheduled for Wednesday, February 19, 2025. In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), Cook stated, “Get ready to meet the newest member of the family,” accompanied by an Apple logo animation.   While the specific product has not been confirmed, industry analysts widely anticipate that this event will unveil the next-generation iPhone SE. Expected features for the new model include:

A design similar to the iPhone 14, featuring a notched display and the removal of the home button in favor of Face ID.

A larger 6.1-inch OLED screen, replacing the previous 4.7-inch display.

Transition to a USB-C port, aligning with recent regulatory requirements.

Introduction of a customizable Action button.

An upgraded single rear camera with enhanced sensors.

Internally, the device is expected to feature an A18 chip, 8GB of RAM, and Apple’s first in-house 5G modem, though it may not support mmWave 5G.

The starting price is anticipated to be around $500, with 128GB of base storage.

There has been speculation about a potential rebranding to “iPhone 16E,” but it is more likely that the SE branding will continue. Please note that these details are based on industry rumors and leaks, and the official specifications will be confirmed during Apple’s event on February 19.

Obviously just a rumor, but I have been holding on to my slowish iPhone SE second generation so that I can  have a full choice of latest phones.

Is there a blind users buyers guide to the iPhones to help decide  if:

1. LIDAR add aa real advantage.

2. Do newer cameras improve OCR

3. Do newer camera help with Be My Eyes and AIRA?

4. Should I get a cheaper phone and spend the money saved on a pair of smart glasses?

I know folks love their meta glasses, but I would rather pay a little more and not  have Meta capturing my life, but alternatives still appear to be in the rumor stage.

Obviously, until the specifications of the SE are out no decision can be made.

My main complaints with my current phone is it takes about 5 seconds for a Siri response and I don’t believe it is my network, and 40 minutes of walking navigation takes about 60% of my battery life.
