sorry I was not clear before. The directory and the folder structure was
there(lot of 2 digits folders). I could not find messages there. Anyway, I
know now that would solve nothing. I expect to see some like the smsc
folders inside /etc/kannel/store, so maybe I could just move the files
around (BTW, this would not make think far simplier?)
Since this cannot be done, I could not fix that anyway...
Kannel is up and running...

If it is correclty set, you should see under your spool path a series
of folder named 01, 02, 03.... and inside of them you should find
files with their names like the kannel message ID.
You can try this to verify kannel can write to that directory:
Stop kannel. when kannel has no messages in queue
delete all folders under your spool dir (/etc/kannel/store)
restart kannel and send messages
Kannel will start creating folders and write into them the queued messages.
