Thank you for saying this, this was my exact reaction as well. It's unwelcoming not because of the occasional spat (which can actually be quite entertaining in a grab-your-popcorn sort of way) but for the reason you've given. I know of a number of former participants who have either given up entirely or have resigned to being in read-only mode because they feel it's pointless to try and contribute - they're neither a browser vendor nor content provider so their input will be ignored.
