I've done over the air updates on my E71X which didn't require
reinstalling anything. I know the E71 and the E71X are two different
phones. It may also be the case that these were minor updates or weren't
even FW updates at all but rather just updated some of the applications
on the phone. I only mention this because this may be what's causing
some of the confusion here.

it is adviceable to backup important data before doing any software
update in any device. however, you do not need to reinstall
those softwares after the update process.

no, you are not allow to update the device while it is charging. you must
make sure that the battery is about 50% full or 100% full
is adviceable.
