I've done over the air updates on my E71X which didn't require reinstalling anything. I know the E71 and the E71X are two different phones. It may also be the case that these were minor updates or weren't even FW updates at all but rather just updated some of the applications on the phone. I only mention this because this may be what's causing some of the confusion here.
