I think so when you install using Nokia updater through pc, you need to 
re-install all programs but if you just do FW update through phone itself 
using wifi or broadband, you don't have to re-install.

Of course, major FW might be different compared with minor.

ago. i dont need to reinstall the talks. maybe it is
varies from one firmware to another firmware.

Hi. Sorry to correct you, Alan, but everything will have to be re-installed 
on the Nokia E71. It's an older phone, and everything
gets deleted when you do a sofrtware update. I have one. So, yes, Talks, and 
any other apps, will need re-installing.

it is adviceable to backup important data before doing any software update 
in any device. however, you do not need to reinstall
those softwares after the update process.

no, you are not allow to update the device while it is charging. you must 
make sure that the battery is about 50% full or 100% full
is adviceable.
