At the risk of beating a dead horse, mightn't this be an argument in
favour of having osm2pgsql (optionally) preserve relation information
at least for routes? If there were an easy place in PostGIS to look
for the information, then needing to look at the parent wouldn't have
to be a show-stopper. Otherwise, this sounds like an argument for
structuring the data around the limitations of downstream tools.
