I did that once when I was told , I think isonene or something or other would
not burn that was used in this application.

It di dnot. I tried really hard too.

While you are at it, cut off about a 1” cube of the foam. Skewer that cube on a
wire and put a match to it all within a controlled, well ventilated,
non-combustible environment nowhere near the job site. Film the event with your
phone. You may be wanting to show it.

And I will be very interested to find what "code" they're referring to.

I submit that if one is to consider the spray foam insulation as unobstructed
as defined by -13, then the deflector position relative to the bottom level of
the foam is required to be between 1" and 12" per 10.2.6.1.1 ('22 edition).

If the bottom of the insulation is to be considered as obstructed, or the foam
is between members which are obstructed, then the deflector must be 1" to 6"
below the member, but no greater than 22" down from the ceiling/roof deck
above, per 10.2.6.1.2 ('22 again).

I can't wait to learn the rationale behind such a requirement.

In short, remember my oft repeated mantra, whenever someone pops up with
something like this: Prove it.

keep the forum informed, ok?

Funny enough I was told the same a few years ago. His reasoning was that the
uneven nature of the foam application could cause obstructions that weren’t
readily apparent so extra clearance was warranted.

Anybody ever have an AHJ say you need 4” clearance from the bottom of spray
insulation to the deflector?
