Sounds like the AHJ needs to be talking to the spray foam folks.

Too often we take on problems that are clearly not ours.

One of the problem is that insulation installers are not consistent. Some may
stop at the joists, others may just let it flow. It is almost impossible to
properly install sprinks until after the insulation is in, but then it is
difficult to hang the pipe.

On one job I was working on, the insulation contractor buried a line of attic
sprinklers.

No, this is spray on insulation in an attic.

Are they referring to the exposed barrel length for dry heads in freezers?

And I will be very interested to find what "code" they're referring to.

I submit that if one is to consider the spray foam insulation as unobstructed
as defined by -13, then the deflector position relative to the bottom level of
the foam is required to be between 1" and 12" per 10.2.6.1.1 ('22 edition).

If the bottom of the insulation is to be considered as obstructed, or the foam
is between members which are obstructed, then the deflector must be 1" to 6"
below the member, but no greater than 22" down from the ceiling/roof deck
above, per 10.2.6.1.2 ('22 again).

I can't wait to learn the rationale behind such a requirement.

In short, remember my oft repeated mantra, whenever someone pops up with
something like this: Prove it.

keep the forum informed, ok?

Funny enough I was told the same a few years ago. His reasoning was that the
uneven nature of the foam application could cause obstructions that weren’t
readily apparent so extra clearance was warranted.

Anybody ever have an AHJ say you need 4” clearance from the bottom of spray
insulation to the deflector?
