Agreed utterly. The question is where to draw the limit. Rick Beebe's org. could soon well be recruiting Muslim and Jewish users who object to "ham" and "non-ham" ("spam" is definable, could be "chicken", but "ham" is "pork".)
That's exactly what I was concerned about, Tony: Where does it stop? Although, I never thought about the ham/non-ham phraseology at all. Good point!
Once I (in theory, I moved house *long* ago) couldn't order "black" coffee in England any more, for fear of being battered by non-whites. Now I can again. Everybody draws his (ermm ... her) own conclusion as to what extent this farce can be extrapolated and may again be altered in the future.
This issue seems to possess two camps: Those of us who see this as ridiculous and the others who believe the former to be combative about it. I don't really believe many posters were all that "combative" per se, I just think they were a little irritated at the fact that there is no defined stopping point (much as you mentioned).
Personally, I have a real problem with someone complaining about *free* software, but from my experience, those who pay the least tend to complain the loudest. As far as I'm concerned, this entire issue draws attention away from the real problem: Spam. Why spend development time making certain that rule names are non-offensive when the spam itself is by FAR much more offensive? Perhaps it would be more appropriate focusing on ensuring that the rule name/description adequately describes the test that has taken place. There's certainly room for improvement here, but political correctness will completely ruin this process if allowed to get too far out of hand.
BTW, it doesn't really surprise me about the coffee. Here in the south-western United States, we're finally catching up to this sort of "sensitivity" only it's not quite so obvious. Maybe it will stay that way. I'd voice my opinions on the issue of PC much more thoroughly, but I have a suspicion I would probably be censored and this isn't exactly the place for it anyway :-)
(For the record, I think the rule names are just fine the way they are. If someone is upset at a filter because they found out how to read SMTP headers then perhaps they should focus their disgust toward the real problem... *sigh*)
