What do the fetchmail folk say? --- The fetchmail documentation says that it _tries_ to get the sender (or resender) of the mail and reconstruct the 'from' line, but this is not 100% accurate. Only if envelope-sender messages are included in the Received From messages can it decipher that it came from a 'remailer' (mailing list). There are envelope-send messages, but now they are about 15 lines further down beyond headers that most filters would not recognize. I'm guessing that in some cases more filter lines are inserted than in others and fetchmail, in order to not have to try to parse the entire header just to sort email, gives up after the first 20-30 header lines. Thus I get random results based on what tests X-Amika has decided to insert.
But this also misses the point -- mandatory filtering is *bad*. I should be able to receive my email without it first going into a possibly 2-3 hour back-logged queue waiting to be filtered before it is sent to me. My account alone can easily get 1000 emails a day. Multiply that by 100,000 users...maybe average .5 seconds extra time added per email -- that's 2000 minutes of delay (divided by however many servers) they have doing filtering -- and it isn't, of course, evenly spread throughout the day, but bunches like traffic jams at various times of the day.... :-(. It can't be a fetchmail bug because the only place the envelope information is guaranteed to be is in the envelope -- which by the time it gets to my IMAP box, is stripped. Only because many mail configurations copy the envelope information into their received line does such fetchmail filtering work at all. ------------------------------------------------------- This SF.net email is sponsored by: Etnus, makers of TotalView, The best thread debugger on the planet.
