Along the lines of the previous user's complaints, regarding filtering. My ISP instituted a spam filter Amika-Guardian(?). Before they rolled it out they said we'd be able to turn off the filtering -- what they didn't tell you was that you could only turn off spam filtering, not all filtering. It still does full processing for each email (regardless of the filter on/off setting) to look for viruses -- which they will not allow you to disable.
So every email gets full spam and virus filtering, then it checks, if you have spam filtering turned off, it negates any spam 'action'. From two 'short' emails, I saw times of .15 -.22 seconds/email to do processing. I haven't looked at any long emails to check for timing. Oh, here's one--- for a 700K email (pdf attachment), it only took .96 seconds. Time to start sending myself some 100Mb MP3's....Like will take over a minute / email to process.... Anyway...it turns out their email filter has been being randomly tested without it actually 'doing' anything since just past mid may -- around the time I installed SpamAssassin. Remember when I was looking for why my email filters had broken...well turns out fetchmail occasionally gets confused by the extra 10-15 lines (depends on message) that their "email guardian" inserts into the header: Received: from [EMAIL PROTECTED] by mail16.speakeasy.net with AmikaGuardian-Server-1.1.2c-csav (Processed in 0.961793 secs); 07 Jun 2003 16:10:52 -0000 X-AmikaGuardian-Id: mail16.speakeasy.net10550022512366215 X-AmikaGuardian-Category: AN:Picky HTML Clues : 0.02 X-AmikaGuardian-Category: AN:Obvious Clues : 0.32 X-AmikaGuardian-Category: AN:Spam Headers : 0.3 X-AmikaGuardian-Category: AN:Junk Mail : 0.35 X-AmikaGuardian-Category: AN:Spam Language : 0.03 X-AmikaGuardian-Category: AN:Newsletter : 0.3 X-AmikaGuardian-Category: AN:Spam : 0.35 X-AmikaGuardian-Category: AN:Free : 0.03 X-AmikaGuardian-Category: AN:Spam Structure : 0.32 X-AmikaGuardian-Category: AN:Business Communications : 0.3 X-AmikaGuardian-Category: AN:HTML Clues : 0.02 X-AmikaGuardian-Action: Do Nothing() So far, I'm told there is nothing anyone can do to turn this off unless it is turned off for all users. Needless to say, I am complaining vociferously, so far, to no avail. Basically, their response is that most of the users have been demanding it, so majority rules. If I don't like it, setup my own mail server or goto another ISP (like earthlink -- who, I think requires the user to actually turn on filtering before their filters are activated). Speakeasy used to be so good about treating their users like adults when they were a smaller company, but I guess as they have grown, they've gotten more and more children (the over 21 variety) on their net. Now I've seen emails too lists that used to 'echo' in <1-2 minutes, take as long as 5-6 hours to echo back. At .1-1 second / email, I can see a potential large back log caused by this. BTW, does S-A insert timing statistics that it took to process an email? Might be an interesting datum to add.... :-( Linda ------------------------------------------------------- This SF.net email is sponsored by: Etnus, makers of TotalView, The best thread debugger on the planet.
