IMO, it's best to let any daemon run standalone...too much start time necessary to start it via inetd.
That notwithstanding, I'm not even sure that spamd would take to starting via inetd/xinetd. But I've seen little overhead from running spamd standalone. The spamc processing can take some time, especially on really large messages, but the latest releases seem to have addressed that.
