It works because - well, I don't know.  Which is kind of the point.
That is, the syntax, whitelist_from, etc., has nothing to do with the
underlying SA logic.  The syntax just tells SA that if a message is from
'whoever' then let it pass.  The syntax says nothing about what logic SA
carries out in order to determine from whom a particular message comes.
