You may have been trapped with a Microsoft Windows update which some of my machine ran at about this time today.  Blew up the OpenOffice presentation which was running, but it started ok after the updatee finished.  The only thin you can do is wait for 5 to 6 hours and see if it finally finishes

I don't know the exact answer but you might have to use Microsoft Excel to save the document into another format, to allow Open Office to open it.
