I don't know the exact answer but you might have to use Microsoft Excel to save the document into another format, to allow Open Office to open it. I don't know enough about the file specification needed in the Open Office version, but know that when I have tried to open Excel files on Mac versions, some times I would have to save the Excel document under an earlier Microsoft Standard, that was supported by that alternative spread sheet program to have that one open a spread sheet.Note that sometimes this causes some functions and some formatting to get distorted due to the upgrades done to later versions of Excel that you are now using that the earlier version did not have.
It is a thought on your problem anyway. Try experimenting with your filesave feature in Excel, and then with that modified file type, attempt to open it in Open Office. That is the best I can think of.
