it's because Firefox has eaten up a lot of RAM/Swap so I think that it
(or the kernel) is freeing up that memory before the Firefox process
actually exits. This is quite hard disk intensive so my hard drive
indicator flashes continuously whilst this happens. Sometimes I get
bored and
ut Ubuntu support for a GPS sports watch I use
but didn't really get much encouragement - it would be nice to think
that my request went further than customer services, but I doubt it.

that RAM is more important than processor for your purposes -
get a modest amount now and then upgrade it in a couple of years when
the RAM's cheaper and you'll feel like you got a new machine. (I didn't
notice what RAM the machine you're talking about came with).

Feisty->Gutsy->Hardy ... I had
problems after Hardy unfortunately but not a massive one like that which

rs - they aren't open source so Ubuntu disables them
by default.
I'm not an expert so I'm sure you'll get better advice but hopefully

So manuals/training etc are very important if the installations are to
become permanent and not a pet project of the current manager.
