When I was buying a laptop from PC World pre-installed with Vista I
happened to mention to the sales guy that I didn't care what came with
it as I'd be ripping it off and putting Linux on there. The sales guy
looked a little startled and told me that this would invalidate the
warranty - software, hardware, the lot!

After a little chuckling it turned out that he was serious. He checked
with his manager and he agreed.

Personal Computer World magazine ran an article echoing my experience
and said that it probably wouldn't stand up to close scrutiny by the
authorities, but not to count on that.

So, maybe a CD stand there would need discussion with the store manager
about the implications.

For what it's worth I got the same machine for the same price at their
sister company next door - Currys - who informed me that installing
Linux would not invalidate the warranty.
