I tried the hint from a2d2, but with no success. Ubiquity crashed and
was not impressed by reiserfs.
However, I worked around this problem by doing the following: In VMware
(under Win XP), I installed Ubuntu 8.10 x64 in a virtual machine. Then I
copied the initrd.img file to the host
Same problem on my machine: ATI 2400 with LG 226WTQ. After GDM starts,
the screen is blank and the monitor goes standby. I don't have an idea
how to change the driver to "vesa", so I can't verify this workaround.
The only thing I did is pressing Alt+F1 and typing "sudo reboot".

Well, I already know why this bug "disappeared"... Because at the time
of reporting this bug (August 2009), I used my on-board sound, whereby
now I use an PCIe sound card because the on-board sound is defective.
So, it's likely that the bug is still there, but I can't test it
anymore.

It took me some time to test this bug again because bug #608382
prevented me of testing it. Today, I've tried to boot my system with
Maverick Beta and when the onboard sound is enabled, the Kernel still
crashes, that means, problem is still there.
