Public bug reported:

I installed compiz on Xubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr. The first time I issued
"compiz --replace", there was no problem and everything worked
perfectly. After the following reboot, problems appeared first. When I
log in, I see the recently used windows shortly, as well as all panels,
but they are layered over each other and seem to be all at position 0/0
(see screenshot attached). After that I can only see the desktop. I can
right click there and the XFCE context menu appears, where I can start
applications, but their windows are invisible. I then have to switch to
tty1 and kill compiz. When I switch back to tty7, I see all the windows
I opened previously. If I right-click the desktop, nothing happens;
however, Ctrl+Esc opens the XFCE context menu and I can start
applications. XFCE panel is still missing. All compiz effects that I set
up work.
