I can confirm this bug for me, and I'm also not using PulseAudio. I'm
not using any GNOME accessibility features either (I don't even have
them installed). This is terrible; I can't even access my gstreamer or
event sound properties just because I don't want/need PulseAudio on my
system?

Chris Coulson: your patch in the upstream bug report looks nice and I
hope it is accepted.
While one is able to work around the CPU usage issue with the autospawn
= false hack, there is still this problem for those of us not using
PulseAudio: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-

arky, a patch has been committed upstream for the CPU usage issue. It should
find its way into Ubuntu soon. In the meantime, I have found that creating a
~/.pulse/client.conf file with this single line:
autospawn = false
will fix the CPU usage.

Vincenzo, see my comment above with the link to the other bug report.
While it was great that this symptom was solved, it doesn't fix the root
of the problem (too much hard-coded dependence on Pulse).

I just wanted to note that this still occurs with updated drm/X/mesa/ati
from x-org edgers. Also, the problem goes away if I install mountall
from the mediahacks PPA and purge plymouth.

Since you're modifying the Ubuntu configuration, your bug will probably
be converted into a question.
Did you completely remove pulseaudio from your system? If not, you
should try an updated version of libopenal1 that fixes a lot of

Michał, I'm trying the latest WINE/pulse on one of my installs and it performs
fairly well with the few games I play.
If you ever try pulseaudio again, you need to do this to get ALSA apps like

I know this doesn't fix the bug, but I'd really recommend a good PCI

This is a known issue with wine. Run winecfg (use 'winecfg' command in

videos in AOE2 (I forget the exact switches, but they're in the readme).
