This issue seems to be very sporadic. I finally remembered to run the
command when the applet reported 0C

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/var/lib/dpkg$ netcat localhost 7634
|/dev/sda|WDC WD400BEVS-22LAT0|ERR|*||/dev/sdb|SAMSUNG HD321KJ|41|C|

This occurred after I unplugged my backup hard disk. It is an internal
SATA disk (the WDC WD400BEVS seen above) and no file systems from it
were mounted when I unplugged it. I was able to get correct output from
the applet by removing the applet from the panel and adding it again.
