Your description doesn't indicate a bug in Ubuntu, but rather a bad
command in that guide. You should contact the author of the guide to
report the problem.

BTW, You can fix the problem by editing the file ppa.list (with the following 
command):
gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ppa.list

The file should look like this:
#PPA openoffice-pkgs
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/openoffice-pkgs/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main
